The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has developed a range of resources to help workers get their tax returns right – including a guide specifically for trades.
From car and travel expenses to tools and protective gear, the tax time guide has been created to help work out what they can and can’t claim.
An ATO app is available to keep work-related receipts and invoices in one place. And after the return has been lodged, its progress can be tracked too. According to the ATO, most tax returns lodged online take about two weeks to be processed.
The ATO also notes the potential impact of COVID-19 on claims. From July 1, 2021, COVID-19 tests purchased for work are tax deductible if:
- They were used for a work-related purpose
- The test was a PCR or RAT
- You have a record of the purchase
- You paid for the test yourself and were not reimbursed for the cost by your employer.

Resources have also been created for apprentices.
