Australian Industry Standards (AIS) is coordinating an update of the national electrotechnology training package and has made the draft materials available for final comments.

The electrotechnology training package includes the materials used to teach refrigeration and air conditioning throughout Australia. It has undergone some important changes.

Three units have been restructured so that students get a more logical learning experience.

“The existing versions focused on the skills of installing, commissioning and fault-finding,” says long-time TAFE educator Steve Smith, who is part of the RAC Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).

“The proposed replacements focus on the skills in relation to an application – for example, medium temperature cabinets and rooms.”

The new package also separates the two units on refrigerants and motors ito four. New technologies are continuing to expand the content in these topics, leading to the change.

Four rounds of feedback have already been held this year. This consultation will run until August 7 and is the last opportunity to provide feedback before the TAC considers comments and makes any final changes to the package.

After that, the materials will be reviewed and signed off by the Industry Reference Committee (IRC) and state training authorities. The AIS expects the package to receive final endorsement in December 2019.
